Photoshop, a very good, but also pretty expensive application. Photoshop is developed by Adobe and is one of the most-used professional photo editing applications. If you want to do something with images, you can be pretty sure that Photoshop can do it. But what if you don’t want to spend that much money on a professional photo editing suite? Then it would be better – of course – if you’d be able to edit your images for free.
The best Photoshop alternative is called Gimp. It’s a completely free and open source application. And, frankly, it offers most of the features that the official Adobe suite offers.
Just like the official Photoshop, is the Gimp user interface very customizable. You can choose which windows and panels you want to show, and where you want to show them. You can even change the look and feel of Gimp, using special themes.
Aside from that you can, off course, edit all your images and photos. Gimp includes a lot of editing functionalities. You can even open traditional Photoshop files within Gimp, and just use the files as you would in Photoshop. You can even save files in the psd Photoshop file format. Aside from the psd file format, you can also save your images in standard image formats like jpg, png, and much more.
The native file format for Gimp is xcf, but it probably won’t be smart to save your files in this format. Because the psdfile format is accepted, and known, on a far larger scale. When you work together with other people, there’s probably a bigger chance that they work with Photoshop than that they work with Gimp. If you’re sure that you won’t be sharing the file with Photoshop users, then there’s no problem, then you can freely use the xcf format.
I actually prefer Photoshop over Gimp, but if you don’t want to spend any money on a photo editing suite, Gimp is your best bet.
